Mohan Rajan – A Journey of Words, Music, and Determination
Mohan Rajan is a renowned lyricist in the Tamil film industry, celebrated for his emotional depth, poetic finesse, and unique storytelling through music. He was born in Maikelnayakanpatti, Trichy, and completed his schooling in Valayapatti. Even during his high school days, Mohan showed sparks of creativity — composing tunes and writing songs. Recognising his potential, his friend Babu Raj encouraged him to pursue lyric writing seriously, which planted the earliest seeds of confidence in him as a creator.
Alongside his growing artistic interest, Mohan Rajan obtained a correspondence degree in B.A. Tamil Literature, strengthening his command over the language. His professional journey began modestly, as he took up jobs at radio and Podhigai TV. During this phase, he met Professor Saaru, a person who played a key turning point in his life. When Mohan expressed his desire to join a regular college, Saaru immediately asked, “Do you want to study at Loyola College?” Mohan hesitated, thinking about his sister who couldn’t secure a seat there despite high grades. Saaru then informed him about a brand-new course — Viscom Media Arts. The very next day, Mohan enquired about it and joined. Looking back, he considers this one of the most crucial decisions in his life.
The First Song – A Beautiful Twist of Fate
Mohan Rajan had already written his first song even before joining college. Shortly after joining, he met James Vasanthan, and that song turned out to be a major success — marking the real beginning of his professional journey in cinema.
Opportunities started to come his way with films such as Sundarapandiyan and Kutty Puli, especially the opening songs that became instant hits. Director Sasikumar played a significant role in shaping Mohan Rajan’s early success. Sasikumar strongly believed in Mohan’s talent, and Mohan lived up to that trust. Their bond carried forward through multiple films up to Tourist Family, creating an enduring and unbreakable professional relationship.
Mohan Rajan later broadened his musical collaborations across the industry. His work with Sean Roldan in the movie Good Night won listeners’ hearts with songs like “Naan Gaali”, and in Lover with “Thean Sudare” — both becoming unforgettable romantic melodies.
Today, Mohan Rajan is regarded as a lyricist who has travelled across the music industry and gifted audiences numerous soulful songs. He firmly believes that hard work, combined with the right people, always results in something beautiful. During interactions, he often shares insights about his craft and his passion toward constantly learning and evolving.
He is currently working on several new projects, some of which are yet to be released. In the years to come, Mohan Rajan is poised to become a towering name in the world of music one that cannot be ignored.
