Electronic Kili: Crafting Emotion Through Soundscapes

In a time where film music often chases instant hooks and loud impact, Electronic Kili stands apart by listening inward. His compositions don’t rush for attention, they unfold slowly, carrying emotion, memory and silence within them. Known for his electronic sensibilities yet unafraid of melodic vulnerability, Electronic Kili represents a new wave of composers who believe that music must first feel true before it feels big.

Electronic Kili, whose original name is Stephin Jose was born in Idukki, a place where nature quietly shapes rhythm and tone. His earliest connection with music came during his school years, when he began playing the piano in church. Those moments of live performance, surrounded by stillness and devotion, played a crucial role in shaping his sense of melody and emotional pacing.

Unlike many musicians who pursue music from the start, his path took a practical turn before circling back to passion. He completed his B.Tech, only to later follow his calling to music by joining KM Music Conservatory, Chennai. It was here that he began working deeply on himself not just technically, but creatively learning how to translate emotion into structured composition and how film music functions as a storytelling tool.

His entry into the film industry came in 2022, when he started working alongside composer Ankit Menon. Through this collaboration, he gained hands-on exposure to film scores and production workflows. These early years were less about recognition and more about learning understanding how music supports narrative, character and mood.

While he had earlier worked on Vaazha: Biopic of a Billion Boys as a music producer, his true arrival as a composer came with Thalavara, which marked his full debut as a music director. The opportunity came through producer Mahesh Narayanan, who reached out to him after listening to his music. Trusting the sound and the instinct behind it, the producer brought him on board a moment that validated years of quiet preparation.

One of the most loved songs from Thalavara, Ilakozhiye, has an origin that reflects Electronic Kili’s intimate creative process. He keeps more than a hundred melody recordings on his phone ideas captured spontaneously over time. Whenever he feels creatively stuck, he revisits these recordings, often listening to them every morning. Ilakozhiye was born as a combination of several such recordings, making it one of the easier songs for him to compose compared to others in the film. The simplicity of its creation contrasts with the depth of emotion it carries.

Though Electronic Kili is largely known for working with electronic sounds, Thalavara pushed him into unfamiliar territory. This project required a different emotional texture less driven by electronics and more rooted in mood and melody. After the completion of the songs, the director felt the music had turned out exceptionally well. For Electronic Kili, this shift marked an important moment of growth, proving to himself that his musical language could evolve beyond genre boundaries.

Despite the positive response from audiences, he remains grounded. He openly admits that he is still learning music and the appreciation he has received so far has left him more overwhelmed than confident. For him, every project is another classroom.

Currently, Electronic Kili is working on two upcoming films, both of which he describes as interesting scripts that allow him to explore new musical directions. With each step forward, he continues to refine his voice not by chasing trends but by trusting process, patience and personal truth.

From a church piano in Idukki to the evolving soundscape of contemporary cinema, Electronic Kili’s journey is one of quiet persistence where sound becomes story and melody becomes memory.
