Jishnu Sreekumar: A New-Gen Writer with the Heart of a Director
Born in Trivandrum, Kerala, Jishnu Sreekumar represents a new generation of Malayalam writers who stepped into cinema with clarity, passion, and long-term vision. His journey did not begin inside film schools or through industry connections, but in an engineering classroom where conversations slowly turned into screenplays. Along with his batchmate Jithin K Jose, who later became associated with the team of Kurup, Jishnu began nurturing a shared dream , to make films that mattered. What started as casual discussions during their college days became serious writing sessions after graduation. While many around them pursued conventional careers, they chose storytelling.
That commitment resulted in Jishnu’s debut as a writer with Kalamkaval. The story screenplay and dialogues were written jointly with Jithin K Jose. One of the distinctive aspects of the film was its linguistic blend nearly one fourth of the script was in Tamil, adding texture and authenticity to the narrative. The characters in the film were not created in isolation; they were shaped by observations from real life. Jishnu has often drawn from various incidents and personalities, carefully combining traits from different individuals to create layered and believable characters.
His father, a policeman, played an indirect but powerful role in influencing the design of the character portrayed by Vinayakan. The authority, emotional discipline, and complexity seen in that role had roots in Jishnu’s personal exposure to the life of a police officer. Initially, the part was intended for Prithviraj Sukumaran, but due to his commitments directing L2: Empuraan, the plan changed. It was Mammootty who suggested Vinayakan’s name, a decision that eventually proved to be a strong creative move. Vinayakan’s intensity and unconventional performance style elevated the character, and the collaboration turned out to be impactful.
When Kalamkaval received positive responses, Jishnu did not allow comfort to slow him down. Instead, the appreciation strengthened his resolve. For him, the debut was not a destination but a starting point. He believes in constantly evolving and delivering stronger narratives. While writing has been his entry into cinema, his larger ambition is to become a filmmaker and director. He is already planning his steps toward that direction and hopes to debut as a director in the near future.
His upcoming work includes a thriller, a genre that demands tight structure and psychological depth. At the same time, he is exploring romance and science fiction, proving that he does not want to confine himself to a single narrative style. This willingness to experiment reflects a writer who values growth over repetition.
Jishnu Sreekumar’s journey is still unfolding, but what stands out is his clarity of purpose. He writes with the discipline of an engineer and the sensitivity of an observer. He dreams like a filmmaker even while functioning as a writer. From a college classroom in Trivandrum to professional film sets, his path has been shaped by consistency, collaboration, and belief in his craft. If Kalamkaval marked his arrival, the years ahead may well define his evolution not just as a writer, but as a storyteller who aims to build cinema that lingers in the minds of audiences long after the screen fades to black.
