Dino Shankar: Designing Worlds Between Reality and Imagination

Born in Bombay and shaped by the restless creative energy of the city, Dino Shankar’s journey into cinema is one rooted in curiosity, instinct, and an unwavering attraction to visual storytelling. Though his native roots lie in Ottapalam, Palakkad, Dino grew up and graduated in Bombay, a space that quietly prepared him for a life behind the scenes, building worlds that feel lived in, textured and emotionally resonant.

Interestingly, cinema was not his first academic destination. Dino was an advertising student who graduated in mass media, initially aspiring to become a copywriter. Words fascinated him, but visuals pulled him harder. Even while studying, he always knew that he wanted to work in the film field in some form. Before stepping into movies, Dino explored creativity through events. Along with a friend, he ran an event company, which gave him hands on exposure to designing stages, understanding spatial aesthetics, and working under real world pressures. That phase helped him understand the creative side of physical spaces how people move through them, how visuals interact with emotion, and how design can amplify experience.

The turning point came unexpectedly, through a phone call that opened the doors to cinema. Dino entered the film industry in Hindi cinema, where he found his footing and learned the discipline of large-scale filmmaking. His first proper feature film was Detective Byomkesh Bakshy, directed by Dibakar Banerjee. Working on the film in 2013 proved to be a defining experience. The film’s period setting and layered visual language demanded precision, research and imagination qualities that would later become hallmarks of Dino’s work. The film was eventually released in 2015 and stands as an important milestone in his career.

Equally important in shaping his artistic foundation was his mentorship under Vandana Kataria, his first guru. Learning under her guidance, Dino absorbed not just technical skills but also the philosophy of art direction how design must serve the story, characters, and emotional rhythm of a film. During this phase, he also worked on a short film titled Dil Abhi Bhara Nah created along with his friends. The project allowed him to experiment freely, collaborate closely, and understand filmmaking at a deeply personal level.

In 2016, Dino took a significant step by working on his first independent film, Anandham. This project marked his entry into the indie space, where creative freedom often comes paired with limitations. Anandham was not just another film in his filmography; it represented a shift in approach, allowing him to explore intimacy, realism, and grounded aesthetics. Soon after Anandham, he worked on Moothon, a project that challenged him both creatively and logistically.

Moothon was shot in two different locations and posed unique difficulties during production. One of the major challenges was working with a small camera setup, which required adaptability and inventive problem solving. While sets were built for the film the constraints demanded a more organic approach to design, blending constructed spaces seamlessly with real locations. For Dino, these challenges became learning experiences, reinforcing the idea that limitations often push creativity to unexpected heights.

After Anandham and Moothon, Dino worked in Varane Avashyamund  and after that Dino didn’t work on Malayalam films for a while, choosing instead to explore opportunities across industries and formats. His career expanded beyond feature films into high-profile web series and anthologies, allowing him to work with diverse narratives and production styles. Projects like Sacred Games and Made in Heaven placed him at the center of India’s evolving streaming landscape, where realism, detail and authenticity became essential visual tools rather than mere embellishments.

Despite his association with strong indie sensibilities, Dino has never confined himself to a single space. He has consistently maintained that he is open to working both as an independent art director and as part of larger teams whenever opportunities arise. This flexibility has allowed him to balance artistic expression with collaboration, adapting his design language to suit different directors, genres and platforms.

One of the scripts that personally excited him was The Pet Detective. Drawn to its fun and engaging nature, Dino chose the project out of genuine interest rather than scale alone. His love for the script translated into enthusiastic involvement, reaffirming his belief that emotional connection to a story is essential for meaningful visual design.

Family support has played a quiet but crucial role throughout his journey. Dino’s family believed in him and stood by his choices, giving him the confidence to navigate an uncertain industry with patience and perseverance. That trust allowed him to take creative risks without fear.

Looking ahead, Dino Shankar’s career shows no signs of slowing down. He is currently involved in an ongoing Telugu film starring Vijay Deverakonda, produced by Sri Venkateswara Creations. The project,  Rowdy Janardhana, is in active production and marks another significant expansion of his work across regional industries. In addition, he has two to three upcoming films lined up, including Multiverse Manmadhan starring Nivin Pauly, another Dear students which is an upcoming release  along with a few untitled projects. He has also nearly completed work on a Hindi film for Amazon, further strengthening his presence in the streaming space.

From advertising classrooms and event stages to meticulously designed film sets, Dino Shankar’s journey reflects a deep commitment to storytelling through space and texture. His work does not seek attention for itself but quietly enhances the worlds his characters inhabit. In an industry that constantly evolves, Dino continues to adapt, learn and design one frame at a time.
