His path was guided by a deep passion for visual storytelling, a series of pivotal moments, and a wealth of experience accumulated over the years.

Karthik’s story begins in Valliyoor, a small town that might not immediately come to mind when one thinks of the glittering world of cinema. But Karthik’s journey to fame was inspired by a series of events that pushed him to explore beyond the familiar horizons. After completing his school education, Karthik moved to Mumbai, where his brother was working. Little did he know that this move would shape his career in ways he had never imagined.

In Mumbai, Karthik initially helped his brother with his business, but his passion for visual arts continued to burn within him. Recognizing that his true calling was in cinematography, he decided to pursue a formal course in the field. It was a decision that would set him on a remarkable trajectory in the world of filmmaking.

After completing his cinematography course, Karthik Thillai’s career took a significant leap when he started working as an Associate cinematographer to the legendary Cinematographer Santhosh Thundiyil. For five long years, Karthik honed his craft under the mentorship of Santhosh Thundiyil, whose body of work included iconic films like Rowdy Rathore (2012), and Jai Ho (2014), Jayantabhai ki Love Story, Traffic and Rustom.

Santhosh Thundiyil, known for his brilliant use of light, shadow, and composition, was an invaluable mentor to Karthik, helping him understand the nuances of framing, camera angles, and how to tell a story through visuals. The experience working with a master of his craft gave Karthik a solid foundation and the confidence to take the next step in his career.

After years of working as an assistant, Karthik’s life took another significant turn when he met producer CV Kumar in Chennai. This chance encounter became a pivotal moment in Karthik’s career. CV Kumar saw the potential in Karthik and offered him a chance to work as the Director of Photography (DoP) for the film Gangs of Madras, marking Karthik’s debut as a lead cinematographer.

Just as Karthik was preparing to leave for Mumbai to shoot an Akshay Kumar movie in London, he received the call from CV Kumar. It was an opportunity he couldn’t turn down. The film Gangs of Madras marked Karthik’s first foray into the limelight, and his work in the film garnered attention for its raw energy and gripping visuals. The film told a compelling story of power and betrayal, and Karthik’s cinematography played an integral role in bringing the intense narrative to life.

Films like Jangoo, Soothukavvum 2, MaayaOne (Telugu), and Pagaivanukku Arulvai (Actor Sasi Kumar Lead Role) showcased his versatility as a cinematographer. Each of these projects had their own unique style, but what remained consistent was Karthik’s ability to blend narrative with his visual flair, creating a truly immersive experience for the audience.

His work in these films was lauded for its distinct style, seamless transitions, and his ability to bring out the essence of the story through lighting, framing, and composition. Karthik’s camera work was no longer just about capturing moments—it was about enhancing the storytelling and connecting with the emotions of the characters and viewers alike.
