N.R. Raghunathan – A Journey from a Village Dream to the Big Screen

N.R. Raghunathan, a well-known music director, hails from a small village near Thiruchendur, Tamil Nadu. His passion for music began at a very young age, nurtured by a simple gift from his father — a radio. This radio became his window to the world of music, sparking a lifelong interest that would shape his future. During his school days, which doubled as a church on Sundays, he would often listen to choir music. These early musical experiences left a lasting impression on him, further deepening his love for melodies and composition.

As a child, he joined a local music troupe, where he travelled and performed, gaining exposure to stage music. He later learned the basics of music from a female teacher, which solidified his desire to pursue music professionally. With dreams in his heart, he moved to Chennai, the hub of the Tamil music and film industry. Unfortunately, he couldn’t afford to join a formal music school. Instead, he took up various jobs to sustain himself. During this time, he met a member of a music troupe and began travelling and working with them, slowly reconnecting with his passion.

A turning point came when he met Udaya Shankar, a film editor. N.R. Raghunathan expressed his wish to become an assistant music director. Though the response was non-committal at first, one day Udaya Shankar surprised him with an offer — to compose music for an advertisement. N.R. Raghunathan hesitated, admitting he had no prior experience, but Udaya Shankar encouraged him to take the leap. The ad turned out well, and the director appreciated his work. This small opportunity opened doors. N.R. Raghunathan soon began composing for devotional songs, short films, and gradually built a name for himself. One of his songs reached a major industry figure, marking the real beginning of his career. In his early years, he met G.V. Prakash, then a young music director, and later collaborated with him on several projects.

N.R. Raghunathan made his debut as a film music director with Thenmerku Paruvakaatru, which was a success and gave him industry recognition. From there, he continued to compose for critically acclaimed and commercially successful films.
