Noufal Abdullah: From the Edit Room to the Director’s Vision

Noufal Abdullah’s journey into cinema is one shaped by instinct rather than intention. Born in Ottapalam, Palakkad he grew up in a place that frequently became a shooting location. Though he had no formal exposure to filmmaking at a young age, the constant presence of film crews sparked an early curiosity. Cinema slowly became a fascination, even before he understood where he might fit within it.

After completing his 12th grade, Noufal developed a strong desire to be part of cinema without any fixed role in mind. Editing was never a planned destination. All he knew was that he wanted to work in films, no matter what it took. Driven by a passion for cinema, He ran away from home to Ernakulam with nothing but a few coins and a dream. After wandering the streets for three days, He found a poster at the Kaloor bus stand for Akshaya Catering. He joined them immediately; He was only 18, while the rest of the staff were all over 40.

Eventually, He met Ratheesh, a co-worker closer to his age. They became fast friends. They would constantly boast about the film shoots in his hometown and the stars he had seen, like Mammootty and Mohanlal. In return, Ratheesh told him he had a friend at Kairali Channel who was set to edit for director Shaji Kailas. He promised to take Noufal with him when the time came.

At first, Noufal didn’t believe him, but the day arrived when he announced he was leaving to work on the film The Tiger. Noufal was devastated at the thought of being left behind and pleaded with him for a chance. Months later, he kept his promise and called Noufal for their next project. That movie was Chintamani Kolacase. Despite having never even touched a computer, Noufal began his career there as a Spot Editing Assistant.

This film marked the true beginning of Noufal’s journey as an editor. He went on to assist Don Max on films like Hello, starring Mohanlal, and several other Malayalam projects. As a spot edit assistant, Noufal learned how editing shapes rhythm, emotion and narrative clarity.

Noufal spent four to five years in Chennai, working closely with Don Max for nearly eight years as an assistant and associate editor. During this period, he was involved in extensive spot editing and post-production work. Despite gaining experience and industry recognition, Noufal never rushed to establish himself as an independent editor. For him, passion always came first.

During the Tamil film Jilla, Don Max spoke to him about exploring other creative directions, possibly moving toward direction. This thought stayed with Noufal. Eventually, he stepped away for a while and moved to Dubai, where he worked as an editor in the advertising industry. Though different from cinema, the experience refined his visual sense and storytelling discipline.

His turning point as an independent editor came in 2016, when Khalid Rahman approached him for Anuraga Karikkin Vellam. From that point on, Noufal edited nearly 35 films, spanning various genres. He never found genre shifts difficult, as he approached each project with equal commitment. According to him an editor gives life to a film, shaping its emotional core.

Alongside Malayalam cinema, Noufal has also worked on Tamil films and collaborated on Telugu projects with Don Max. His second collaboration with Khalid Rahman, Unda, further strengthened their creative bond. While Khalid planned his third film, Noufal began shifting his focus toward direction.

Though he attempted to direct a film before the COVID-19 pandemic, the project didn’t materialize. Post-pandemic changes in the industry affected his confidence, leading him to step back from direction for a while. By then, the industry had begun recognizing his interest in directing and he consciously reduced his editing projects.

A renewed opportunity came when a friend introduced him to a strong subject. Instantly connecting with the story, Noufal began shooting in December, completing the film over an eight to nine-month process. The result was Nellikkampoyil Night Riders, his directorial debut, released this year.

Casting Mathew Thomas as the lead was a deliberate choice. Noufal felt he suited the character perfectly, and the actor agreed to take on his first lead role. The film received a positive response, especially from local audiences. Noufal acknowledged that while the film isn’t a conventional commercial entertainer, he personally enjoys mainstream cinema and openly admires Vijay’s films. The film also secured an OTT release on Zee5.

Beyond filmmaking, Noufal is the founder of NAAFE Academy, based in Cochin. Established four years ago, the academy reflects his commitment to nurturing young talent. With a dedicated team, he actively teaches Editing and interacts with students who show strong interest in filmmaking.

As a debut director , Noufal takes audience feedback with humility and honesty. Looking ahead, he confirms that he is currently writing his next project, marking the beginning of a new phase in his career.

Noufal Abdullah’s journey from an uncertain entrant into cinema to an editor of over 35 films and now a director stands as a quiet testament to patience, passion and belief in the craft. His story proves that sometimes, the most meaningful paths are discovered along the way, not planned in advance.
