Kalaiselvan Sivaji – Cinematographer in Tamil Cinema
Kalaiselvan Sivaji is an emerging cinematographer best known for his work in the critically acclaimed film Por Thozhil. Born in Thiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, his journey into the world of cinema is as inspiring as it is unconventional.
Before stepping into the film industry, Kalaiselvan earned a Master’s degree in Computer Science and briefly worked in the IT sector for a year. However, his growing interest in photography gradually guided him toward a more creative path. Driven by passion, he pursued a filmmaking course under the legendary Balu Mahendra sir, where he trained for over a year and a half, gaining valuable insights into the art and craft of cinema.
Following this, he worked as an assistant cinematographer under the renowned Balasubramaniam, where he honed his technical skills and developed a deeper understanding of visual storytelling. One of the core philosophies he embraced was that “it’s not up to us to impose a style—the script dictates the visual tone. Our job is to create beautiful visuals that serve the story. Creativity must be driven by the script, not forced into it.”
Throughout his career, he collaborated on several projects alongside leading cinematographers, including George C. Williams, gaining diverse experience and refining his cinematic language. His dedication and grounded approach eventually led to a pivotal moment in his career—his debut as a lead Director of Photography in Por Thozhil. Interestingly, the opportunity came when a friend, initially assigned to the project, referred Kalaiselvan due to scheduling conflicts. The film went on to be a massive success, with his visuals receiving widespread acclaim.
Following the success of Por Thozhil, he worked on Maareesan, another well-received project that further showcased his ability to elevate storytelling through compelling cinematography. His work in both films stands out for its clarity, mood, and narrative strength.
With multiple projects lined up currently he is working on BroCode movie Ravi Mohan Starrer Karthik yogi Directorial, Kalaiselvan Sivaji is undoubtedly a talent to watch. His commitment to storytelling through visuals, paired with his humble beginnings and rich learning experiences, positions him for even greater heights in the years to come.
