Vivek Vijayakumar – The Visual Soul behind Thaai Kizhavi

In Tamil cinema, some cinematographers do not simply capture visuals—they create emotions through frames. One such promising name is cinematographer Vivek Vijayakumar, whose remarkable work in Thaai Kizhavi has earned him well-deserved recognition and appreciation from both audiences and industry insiders.

Hailing from Tiruppur, Vivek Vijayakumar’s journey is deeply rooted in his hometown. His schooling, college life, and early creative inspirations all began there. Unlike many who move to bigger cities early in search of cinema opportunities, Vivek carried his dreams from Tiruppur itself, proving that talent can rise from anywhere.

He pursued Visual Communication (Viscom) at Cheran Arts and Science College, completing his degree in 2012. During his college days, his interest in visuals grew stronger, but his love for photography had already started much earlier. From his 10th standard onwards, Vivek was fascinated by the power of images. What began as curiosity slowly transformed into a life ambition.

Interestingly, Vivek is the first person from his family to enter the film industry, stepping into cinema without any family background or connections. Like many dreamers, his journey was not easy. Before stepping fully into cinematography, he worked as an editor in media, gaining practical understanding of visual storytelling from the post-production side.

That technical foundation became valuable when he moved into cinematography and began working as an assistant cinematographer for nearly two years. His dedication and hunger to learn pushed him forward, and he later worked with noted cinematographer PV Shankar as an associate and operative cinematographer in the film Kalvan.

One of the most significant phases in Vivek’s career came when he worked as Assistant DOP for director Manikandan’s critically acclaimed film Kadaisi Vivasayi. It was during this project that he became close to Thaai Kizhavi director Sivakumar Murugesan, who was then working as a co-director on the same film.

That professional connection later became a major turning point in Vivek’s life.

When Thaai Kizhavi happened, it became more than just another project—it became the film that brought him the recognition he truly deserved. Vivek himself described its success as a “much-needed victory”, a statement that reflects the years of struggle, patience, and perseverance behind that achievement.

The visual language of Thaai Kizhavi stands as proof of his artistic strength.

The film was shot entirely in live locations, not artificial sets. Instead of building large studio environments, the team worked within real spaces, making only minimal changes to preserve authenticity while enhancing cinematic beauty. This approach made the film feel raw, honest, and emotionally alive. What stood out most was Vivek’s extraordinary understanding of colour palette and mood design.

The village portions were treated with a rich warm tone, creating emotional familiarity, earthiness, and rootedness. In contrast, the hospital scenes were designed in a cooler blue tone, visually reflecting emotional distance, clinical tension, and contrast in the narrative world.

Every frame felt intentional.

Every small detail mattered.

Nothing looked accidental.

This level of precision is what separates a good cinematographer from a great one.

Behind every success story, there is often silent support, and for Vivek, that pillar has been his wife. He openly shared that his wife’s support has been one of the biggest reasons for his survival and success in cinema. In an industry filled with uncertainty, emotional and personal support becomes priceless. Vivek acknowledged that without her encouragement, sustaining this journey would have been far more difficult.

That honesty makes his success even more inspiring.

Today, with Thaai Kizhavi, Vivek Vijayakumar has proven that strong visual storytelling does not require noise—it requires honesty, patience, and vision.

From Tiruppur to Tamil cinema, from a student of photography to one of the most promising cinematographers in the industry, his journey is a reminder that true cinema is built by those who quietly dedicate themselves to the craft.

And without doubt, Vivek Vijayakumar is becoming one of the finest cinematographers in Tamil cinema today.

His frames speak and Tamil cinema is listening.
