Gokul – Cinematographer | Storyteller through Lens
Born and raised in Chennai, Gokul’s journey into cinema started long before he ever stepped in to a film set. From a young age, he was captivated by visuals, often discussing cinema and photography with his friends, even before he fully understood the industry. Though he pursued a degree in Civil Engineering from Jerusalem College of Engineering, his heart was always behind the lens.
His early career began in wedding photography, where he developed an eye for capturing real emotions in fleeting moments. This path led him to meet others who shared his passion for visual storytelling. Together, they explored documentary filmmaking, allowing Gokul to gain hands-on experience while expanding his creative circle.
Despite the doubts and discouragement from some around him, Gokul took a leap of faith and joined LV Prasad Film & TV Academy to formally study cinematography. The pandemic hit during his course, adding more challenges—but he stayed determined and completed his training.
Just as things started gaining momentum, tragedy struck—Gokul met with a serious accident that left him bedridden for six months. But he didn’t let that stop him. As soon as he recovered, he came across a notice about a film discussion happening at the late Balu Mahendra sir’s office for the film Buffoon. There, he met Dinesh Purushothaman, a pivotal moment in his career.
Dinesh sir invited Gokul to observe a five-day ad shoot. Gokul absorbed every detail—lighting, framing, the rhythm of the set. His sharp observations impressed Dinesh, who began mentoring him through multiple projects. Gokul remained eager, humble, and driven—qualities that set him apart.
Today, Gokul continues to push his boundaries as a cinematographer, determined to tell authentic stories through the language of light and visuals. Every frame he captures is a reflection of his journey—one marked by resilience, passion, and an unshakable love for cinema.
