Balaji Subramanyam – Director of Photography (Chithha)

Balaji Subramanyam is an acclaimed cinematographer best known for his remarkable work in the film Chithha. Hailing from Mayiladuthurai, Balaji Subramanyam’s passion for cinema was evident from a young age. Even during his school days, he was clear about one thing — his future belonged in the world of films.

He pursued his passion academically by earning a degree in Film Technology from SRM University, where he deepened his understanding of the craft. While still in college, he began working as an intern with well-known DOP Shakthi, contributing to the film Vaalu. His early exposure to the industry gave him valuable hands-on experience.

Balaji Subramanyam continued to explore different facets of filmmaking. He worked on a short film where a friend of Mr. Vijay Karthick Kannan played the lead, and collaborated with K.G. Venkatesh on the film Sathuranga Vettai. His long-standing professional relationship with Vijay Karthick Kannan helped him further sharpen his skills through numerous ad films, associated in some feature films and music videos.

He was also involved in projects like Iravaakaalam and Sindhubaadh, expanding his portfolio and gaining industry recognition. Before fully stepping into the role of a DOP, Balaji Subramanyam created several music video, specially “enjoy enjaami” was a Massive hit collaborated with Arivu and Dhee— a creative outlet that significantly contributed to his visual storytelling ability.

His big break came when one of these many opportunities turned into his debut as a cinematographer in the feature film Chithha. The film was a major milestone and showcased his ability to evoke deep emotion through powerful visuals. Subramanyam is very choosy in films and scripts, he doesn’t want lot of films, and he wants films that remark his name in the industry.

Balaji Subramanyam is not only a skilled cinematographer — he is a multifaceted talent who also excels in editing and colour grading. With such a versatile skill set and a deep-rooted passion for cinema, Balaji Subramanyam is undoubtedly a name to watch out for in the future
