Praveen Prabhakar: Editing with Emotion, Instinct and Experience

For Praveen Prabhakar, editing was never a pre-planned destination it was a path that revealed itself through curiosity, observation, and years of hands-on experience. Born in Calicut, Kerala, Praveen completed his education at  St. Joseph’s College Devagiri. Though he studied zoology, his interests always leaned toward arts and media, a fascination that quietly shaped his future in cinema.

After completing his degree, Praveen moved to Chennai with the intention of pursuing an advertising course. However, circumstances led him to Nextwave Multimedia, where post-production work was carried out. This unexpected turn became a defining moment in his life. Watching the post-production process up close sparked a deep interest in editing. What began as observation soon turned into learning, practice and eventually passion.

His journey took a significant leap when he joined SS Music, where he became the channel’s first editor. At SS Music, Praveen edited the show  Desi Cut, which went on to receive appreciation from MTV a moment that reaffirmed his growing confidence as an editor. This phase opened doors to Rajiv Menon’s office, where he worked extensively on advertisements. Spending nearly a decade there, Praveen sharpened his craft, understanding rhythm, emotion, timing and visual storytelling through commercial and narrative formats alike.

When asked about his first feature film as an editor, Praveen credits Ustad Hotel (2012) as a turning point in his career. The opportunity came through a recommendation from filmmaker Anjali Menon to director Anwar Rasheed. Impressed by his editing skills, they brought him on board. The film marked his formal entry into Malayalam cinema and set the foundation for a career that has since spanned over 30 films.

Discussing his experience editing Kalamkaval, Praveen reflects on the challenges with calm assurance. For him, every film demands the same level of emotional investment and technical precision. He believes that editing is about understanding what the story and each scene truly need. In Kalamkaval, he experimented with non-linear patterns, an approach that ultimately worked in the film’s favour. He describes his professional journey itself as his “film school,” emphasizing that real learning comes from doing, observing, and evolving with every project.

Having edited around three films featuring Mammootty, Praveen speaks with excitement about working with the  mega star. Editing such films, he says, is always thrilling especially because of the actor’s expressive depth. Discussions during editing can be intense, as Mammootty focuses on minute details but Praveen sees this as a creative advantage. Often, while editing, he can sense how the film is shaping up even before it is completed.

Despite working on many acclaimed films,  He enjoys working with debut directors, appreciating the fresh ideas and new perspectives they bring. For him, teamwork and emotional connection to the story matter more than anything else.

His long-standing collaboration with Anwar Rasheed has been built on mutual trust. Praveen notes that Anwar Rasheed gives him the freedom to explore and shape the edit, a freedom that allows creativity to flourish. Beyond Malayalam cinema, Praveen has also worked in a Hindi film called Shiv Shastri Balboa (2022), expanding his cinematic language beyond regional boundaries.

Editing the documentary Curry & Cyanide: The Jolly Joseph Case was a different challenge altogether. Praveen explains that documentaries are lengthy and require careful structuring to maintain engagement and emotional continuity. Connecting real-life events into a coherent narrative was demanding, but also deeply rewarding.

Speaking about his upcoming film Chatha Pacha: The Ring of Rowdies, he describes it as a fresh and enriching experience. The film explores a genre he hadn’t worked in before, making it both challenging and exciting.

On the topic of AI in editing, Praveen acknowledges its usefulness in areas like storyboarding but firmly believes that emotional storytelling remains a human responsibility. According to him, only an editor can truly carry emotions through cuts, rhythm and silence.

Currently based in Cochin, Praveen Prabhakar continues to edit with the same curiosity and dedication that first drew him into a post-production studio years ago guided by instinct, experience and an unwavering respect for the story.
