Vishnu Govind :The Sound Behind the Silence
Some filmmakers write with images. Some actors perform with expressions. But there are rare artists who write with silence, tension, echo and breath. Vishnu Govind belongs to that rare league. Over the years, he has shaped the emotional pulse of more than 150 films across Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi and Telugu cinema, quietly becoming one of India’s most respected re-recording mixers and sound designers.
Born in Thiruvalla, Govind graduated in Physics from St. Berchmans College, Changanassery. It was during his college days that he met Sree Sankar, who would later become his long-time collaborator. Bonding over their shared fascination for music and movies, the two eventually decided to pursue audio engineering professionally.
In 2006, Govind joined the Film and Television Institute of Tamil Nadu to specialize in Sound Engineering and Sound Recording. His time at the institute proved to be creatively defining. He built friendships with emerging talents such as Alphonse Puthren, Karthik Subbaraj, Nalan Kumarasamy, Vijay Sethupathi, Bobby Simha, Rajesh Murugesan and Shabareesh Varma. Many among them would later redefine contemporary South Indian cinema, and these early connections would translate into important collaborations.
He began his professional career as an ADR recordist at AVM Studios in Chennai. However, Govind soon chose to step away from a stable job to focus entirely on films. One of his earliest projects was Alphonse Puthren’s short film Neram, which marked the beginning of a long creative association.
His feature film debut came with Pizza, directed by Karthik Subbaraj. The film was a turning point, not just for Tamil thrillers, but also for sound design in South Indian cinema. Govind and Sree Sankar created a detailed “sound script” for the film, treating sound as an independent storytelling layer. Pizza became the first South Indian film mixed in Dolby 7.1 surround sound, setting a new technical benchmark.
Govind’s Malayalam feature breakthrough followed with Neram, and he continued working with Alphonse Puthren on the widely celebrated Premam and later Gold. Around this time, Govind and Sankar formalized their partnership by establishing their own studio, Sound Factor, strengthening their collaborative identity in the industry.
From 2017 onward, Govind expanded his role into re-recording mixing, beginning with Parava. His work gained consistent recognition. He and Sankar won consecutive Behindwoods Gold Medals for Best Sound for Irudhi Suttru and Aval. Both films were later remade in Hindi, further highlighting the impact of their original soundscapes.
A major career milestone arrived with Malik, directed by Mahesh Narayanan. Having earlier collaborated on Take Off, Govind handled the sound design, editing and final mixing for Malik. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was eventually released on Amazon Prime Video in 2021. The film earned widespread acclaim and brought Govind the National Film Award for Best Audiography (Re-recordist of the final mixed track). Reflecting on the honour, he described it as unexpected and deeply fulfilling, stating that the years of effort and patience had finally paid off.
In Malayankunju, Govind collaborated with legendary composer A. R. Rahman, marking Rahman’s return to Malayalam cinema after nearly three decades. The film’s intense and immersive soundscape once again highlighted Govind’s technical precision and emotional sensitivity.
He later worked on 2018, a disaster drama that became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time. The large-scale sequences demanded complex layering and immersive mixing, reinforcing his stature as one of the finest sound professionals in Indian cinema.
Speaking about Eko, Govind described it as a film not made for commercial success but for craft. He expressed that the emotions he personally felt were embedded into the soundscape of the film. According to him, Eko stands among his best works a project created from the heart rather than market expectations.
His accolades include the Kerala State Film Award for Best Sound Design for Unda and Ishq (shared with Sree Sankar), the National Film Award for Best Audiography for Malik, the Kerala Film Critics Association Award for Best Sound Recording for Malayankunju, and the Indian Recording Arts Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing (Regional) for Neelavelicham in 2024.
Vishnu Govind received the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Sound Designer/Audiography for Soorarai Pottru 2020.
From being part of the early adoption of Dolby 7.1 mixing in South Indian cinema to crafting award-winning national films, Vishnu Govind’s journey reflects dedication, collaboration and an ever-evolving mastery over sound. While audiences may not always see his work, they undeniably experience it. With multiple films lined up and an ever-evolving craft, he continues to redefine how Indian cinema sounds one mix at a time.
