Journey of Costume Designer Ashik to Film Maker

Ashik, a passionate costume designer, was born and brought up in Chennai. He has spent his entire life in the bustling streets of Triplicane, a place close to his heart and rich in untold stories. Interestingly, Ashik never planned to step into the world of costume design. His journey began during a phase when he was jobless and facing pressure from his parents to make something of his life. Out of a need to prove himself, he made a spontaneous decision that would later become his life’s calling—he chose a career in designing.

Realizing the importance of professional training, Ashik enrolled in a course at the DreamZone Institute, where he received formal education in fashion and costume design. Upon completion, he started working with his mentor, who played a crucial role in shaping his early career. One of his first breaks came when he worked as an assistant to his mentor in the show “Neengalum Vellalam Oru Kodi” hosted by Prakash Raj sir.

Soon, his mentor received an opportunity from another channel and entrusted Ashik with the responsibility to take over. Ashik successfully handled the work, and this marked the beginning of his professional journey. He also collaborated with the team at Puthiya Thalaimurai channel, further cementing his place in the industry.

Ashik’s big break in cinema came when he worked as an assistant costume designer in the Rajinikanth-starrer “Kaalaa.” The movie had two primary designers, and Ashik managed costume responsibilities for most of the supporting actors. This project gave him valuable on-set experience and opened more doors.

Following “Kaalaa,” he worked on the film “Hundred,” starring actor Atharvaa. His work caught the attention of the lead costume designer, who then brought him on board for another major project—”Comali,” featuring Jayam Ravi. His dedication and talent stood out, and his growing reputation led him to more projects, including dance choreographer Sandy Master’s debut film and the movie “Jama.”

Ashik also contributed to the movie “Star,” starring Kavin, where he worked alongside his close friend. They have been collaborating on many projects since then. Adding to his versatile portfolio, he also worked as an assistant director in the film “Velaikkaran.”

Apart from feature films, Ashik has been actively involved in short film too. He is now eagerly looking forward to working on “Thani Oruvan 2,” although the shoot is yet to begin. As he continues his journey in the film industry, Ashik has set his sights on direction—a dream he has nurtured since the beginning.

His passion for storytelling is evident in the script he has completed for his directorial debut. He plans to make a love story that is both deep and unique, focusing on emotional depth and authentic storytelling. What excites him most is that the story is deeply rooted in Triplicane. Ashik believes this area of Chennai is rich in history and culture, yet underrepresented in cinema. He wants to change that.

He speaks with heartfelt enthusiasm about Triplicane, from its unexplored streets to its cultural landmarks. His vision is to showcase these lesser-known aspects of the neighborhood to a broader audience. He believes a film set in Triplicane can offer something fresh and meaningful to Tamil cinema.

Ashik has specific actors in mind for his film and hopes to cast one of them. While the casting is still in the planning phase, his passion and clarity of vision are undeniable. He describes his story as beautiful and impactful, with a narrative that has emotional depth and cinematic richness. Though costume designing was never his initial ambition, it paved the way for him to enter the film industry. What drives him now is his long-standing interest in direction. Known to be a jovial and well-connected individual in the cine industry, Ashik is confident that his next step will be the most fulfilling one yet.

As he continues to build his portfolio and reputation, Ashik remains committed to telling stories that matter. He’s not just chasing a dream; he’s building a legacy—one that started unintentionally but is now driven by purpose and passion. Ashik’s journey from a hesitant beginner to a seasoned professional in costume design, and now a future director, is both inspiring and grounded. With a mix of raw talent, sincere effort, and strong industry relationships, he’s definitely someone to watch in the coming years.
